The latest modded Android v2.1 ROMs for HTC Magic are showing a lot of promise. This one, known as "xROM", is almost perfect. The video camera isn't working and the 3D Gallery isn't quite there yet - looking great, just no pics! - but it's very close to working.
Looking forward the next one! But here is the Nexus One live wallpaper running on my HTC Magic.

creative. never thought this....
ReplyDeleteHows the speed? I've been getting increasingly frustrated with the speed (slow loading, unresponsive apps) of my stock Magic.
ReplyDeleteMi - Goto xda-developers and have a looking the "G1 Development" forum. The ROMs there are mostly compatible with the HTC Magic 32B (but not the 32A). Bow that they have the source code to Android v2.1, they are hacking it to make it work on 'older' phones like the Magic and G1.
ReplyDeleteChris: Speed is OK. I've found on "stock" phones that avoiding widgets and turning off background activity can really help performance. A lot of apps you install want to do something in the background...especially when yuo first turn the phone on. You can go through the settings for many apps and turn this behaviour off....or at least make it less frequent. Take a bit of time, but well worth it. Also, getting root access to the phone lets you run "SetCPU" which allows you to set the CPU speed at the full 528MHz...(top speed - NOT "overclocking") and that can make a big difference, too. But turning animations off (or down) and limiting background activity gives a big boost. Of course...leave one what you use. That's the whole point of having tghe phone....but if syncing every hour is good enough...then don't let sync every 5 minutes...(for example). Check the task running using TaskPanel or similar...and kill stuff. Keep the phone lean and mean.
