National's bid to dump democracy underway

The National Party-lead government has announced it's referendum to get rid of democracy in New Zealand and gerrymander elections to suit itself.

They don't call it that, but no voter should be under ANY illusions about what is really going on here.

There was no overwhelming - or even significant - public demand for this referendum. There was no petition with 300,000 signatures. No one could be bothered.

The wealthy few who want one party on speed-dial to pass the laws they see as good for their businesses are behind this...and they are major funders of the National Party. Peter Shirtcliffe still hasn't got over having spent millions in 1993 in his squalid attempt to thwart MMP. Like rust, he has never slept when it came to finding a way to make the votes of his neighbours, family and fellow Kiwis worthless once again....just like they used to be under First Past the Post. It didn't matter who you voted for in many electorates...the same party always won...and your vote was worthless anywhere else. It's MMP that has given each of us a vote that always counts toward representation...and that is the vote they want to take away.

If Kiwis vote MMP out then we will have demonstrated that a majority of us aren't very bright at all and don't really understand what's at stake. That sounds harsh, but there is no other answer for it.

This referendum is National's bid to return to the glory days when a handful of people from one party, elected by less than 40% of the vote, could rule a Cabinet, and thus the Parliament, in a dictatorial manner...and sweep all before them. Legally.

Been there.....not going back to that. If MMP goes, I doubt I'll be hanging around to watch New Zealand be pillaged by the few for the few. There are larger, more prosperous places to be treated like a peasant by self-styled rulers and string-pullers.
