In this video, US President Barack Obama lays out his plans for a national high-speed rail network, linking city-centre to city-centre and providing fresh, efficient infrastructure for the United States....and people won't have to take their shoes off.
This video should be required viewing for the National party caucus here in New Zealand.

The problem is that, outside of the Northeast corridor, rail does not work in the United States unless you're talking average speeds in the 400-500 MPH (640-800 KPH) range.
ReplyDeleteNote, that's average speed, including stops. If you have any stops on the line, you're talking about the world's first supersonic train.
Anon: Whether something works or not is usually all about requirements and expectations. I can see why high speed rail would work in an era where trucking was no longer economic. Passengers could also find it more convenient it is integrates better with public transport. Rail can go city-centre to city centre. Sure, it might take longer than flying, but if it is comfortable and easy, then it will probably "work" for cargo and passengers when fossil fuels are to expensive to waste on such things.
ReplyDeleteThink 50 years out. That day will come.
