Gonna buy a Mac (or three)

I'm going to buy an Apple Mac.

I've never owned an Apple Mac before, other than a VERY old MacIntosh that I inherited for free gazumpty-hand. That one had a 7 inch B&W screen and 512kb of system RAM. But it really, seriously died this year at the age of roughly 25, so I binned it.

I'm going to buy a NEW iMac. Maybe this one or maybe THIS one.

Though if I go with a Mac Mini, I can buy TWO of these or maybe even three.

Or maybe I'll get an iMac AND a Mac Mini (or two) for the kids.

I've been down to the Magnum Mac store several times and played with the systems there. It feels a lot like Ubuntu Linux, but with more bells and whistles. I especially like the video-editing app on the Mac. That's the real reason I'll lay out the money for it.

Ubuntu Linux will remain the workhorse, doing stuff that a proprietary system provider of any sort would want serious money for.

My copy of Windows Vista can gather dust somewhere.

  1. Hello, me again!

iMac's are terrific value and very grunty. If you just want to play around first, grab a Mac Mini - but remember you have to bring your own mouse and keyboard to the party.

And your copy of Vista doesn't have to gather dust, you can use it with Boot Camp and dual-boot Vista on your Mac. Or pick up VMWare Fusion or parallels to run it in a virtual machine.

You can even run Linux inside a virtual machine if you please.

Don't be afraid to spend some money on decent shareware to get the most out of your Mac. Textmate, VMWare Fusion etc... are some of the best of breed applications across any platform and there's a decent stack of open source applications for OS X too.

My one recommendation is to stay away from Magnum Mac for both purchasing and, should you need it, servicing. Their support staff are horrifically inept and many people have had nothing but problems with them. I detail my experiences here but there's much more across the internet if you look. Buy direct from the Apple Store, it's cheaper and easier, and use a different retailer if you need servicing.

    Good Luck!

  2. chris s: Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated. I'm not religious on Magnum Mac. It's clear enough to see their staff have motivational "issues" and often have no idea about the software that people might buy a mac for. One sales guy there - a young guy - was surprised that iMovie was the thing I wanted most. not his thing.....yet for any person using online video sites like YouTube or Live Video of DailyMotion or whatever, the Mac movie software is among the best around that doesn't cost a bomb. Having explained this to him, he then showed little curiosity.....a KEY failing in any human being in ANY context.

I don't care if you don't know something. But fer crissake, be curious. It's the best cure for ignorance I know.

  3. Well you'll never be leaving *nix behind since the new Macs run on a Unix derived core. Something Microsoft should be giving serious thought to.
